- Various newspaper reports at the time vary in the cause of death, some stating he was crushed and died from a broken neck when his aeroplane crashed into the ground during the flying competition at Southbourne Aerodrome. The doctor who attended the scene of the accident stated he was alive initially but died soon after the accident before he could be moved and death was caused by a blow to the head causing severe concussion. Witnesses called at the Coronor's court stated that as the plane fell to the ground, Charles fell out of the cockpit onto the ground.
