  • Notes
    • Known employment history of John Arthur MARSH In 1923 at 17 years of age John was employed by "J.T.Underwood Ltd., Leather Manufacturers and Merchants" at their works, Beddington Corner, Mitcham. The company produced "Enamelled and Patent Leathers in all Colours" and was "Pioneer of Morocco Hides for Motor and General Upholstering in the UK". John was living at Rochester Road, Carshalton when he left this company to go and work for LEECH in about July 1926. John worked for "LEECH (Carshalton) Ltd., Linoleum and and Floorcloth Manufacturers at the Victoria Works, Lower Mills, Butter Hill, Carshalton, Surrey. He left LEECH in June 1927. In 1938 John passed the "Permanent Way Classes" elementary examination to reach the grade of "Lineman" and was based at Purley Station at the time. His employment record between June 1927 and 1938 (the time of his exam result) is unknown but he obviously starting working for the railways during this time. He soon left the UK to work in Africa because on 12th. October 1938 John started working for the West African Railways as a Foreman Platelayer in Nigeria. His salary was £400 a year rising to £460 in annual increments of £12. He left the Nigerian Railways as a Foreman Platelayer in August 1940 to work for the Ashanti Goldfields Corporation (a British Company with headquarters in London). On the 11th. January 1941 John was served with a "NON-COMBATANT SERVICE NOTICE" under the "Gold Coast Compulsory Service Regulations" and a month later on 14th. February 1941 he was issued a "Certificate of Registration" under the same regulations. In March 1942 John wrote to the Ashanti Goldfields Corporation while on leave at 301 Chipstead Valley Road, Coulsdon, Surrey to ask to join the armed forces, a request which was rejected by AGC on the grounds that John was "doing work considered of National importance". Interestingly enough the AGC was based temporarily at "St. Hilda's School, Bushey, Herts" I suppose because their premises at 10 Old Jewry, London was either too dangerous to occupy or had been destroyed by bombing! John continued working for the Ashanti Goldfields Corporation until June 1962 when he retired from Africa to work at the Cardiff Royal Infirmary as a Fitter's Assistant. John Arthur Marsh died at 4 Ivor Street, Barry Island from lung cancer on 23rd. December 1985. He had retired for 14 years and led an active life particularly enjoying cultivating his allotment. John was cremated at Thornhill Crematorium, Cardiff.
